Although London attracts the biggest names in show business and its theatres have the most spectacular effects, there are also many excellent shows to be seen at regional venues. Touring companies often have a wildly enthusiastic cast who truly love what they do and have an uncanny ability to captivate kids. Here are three shows aimed at younger children that could be on at theatre near you in 2016.
Tom Thumb by DNA Puppetry and Visual Theatre
With a running time of 50 minutes and no interval, you may be slightly concerned about your child’s attention span lasting the distance with this production, but you really should not be, as Tom Thumb is a mesmerising journey through the natural world, brought to life with music and puppetry. This version of the first folks story ever printed in English is just right for kids aged 4-9.
James and the Giant Peach by Sell a Door Theatre Company
This thoroughly enjoyable tale from the legendary children’s author Roald Dahl is one of travel and adventure. Children will love following the young hero as he makes his way from the white cliffs of Dover to New York’s Central Park, and his friends Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm. The production is aimed at kids aged 5-10.
Orion and The Dark by Peaceful Lion Productions
If you have ever read the book by Emma Yarlett on which this show is based, you will know Orion and the Dark is a charming tale that deals with overcoming fears. Orion is frightened of most things around him, like sheds, spiders, and storms, but most of all he fears the dark. Your kids join him in facing his biggest fear and discovering it is friendly. Ideal for children aged three and up.
